Healthcare system plays critical role in the community, and costs a high percentage of the government budget. Through delivering the healthcare services, healthcare providers generally face series of operational challenges and lag behind efficiency. To deliver the best healthcare services to the community, governments encourage health providers to be more efficient. This presentation reviews key operational challenges in a healthcare system and presents role of Operations Research (OR) techniques to address these challenges to better utilize healthcare resources. Real case studies based on the healthcare system in Canada will be presented, and the application of OR methods on the healthcare system in Iran will be discussed.
